"The best rides are the ones where you bite off much more than you can chew--and live through it." ~ Doug Bradbury
The Balltown Classic is a 200 mile endurance race that goes from Dewitt, Iowa to Balltown and back. Although the first section of the ride would be considered rolling terrain, a good portion of it goes through Iowa's hill country, making the total elevation gain for the circuit between 10,000 and 11,000 feet. The first run of the Classic was 2002, a cold, wet ride that was so bad that only two finished the course. The following year the weather was much improved, and Jim Amelung set the record that still stands, completing the double century in just over 10 hours. Since then records have been set by tandems, women, HPV's and recumbents, but to date, none have bested Amelung's '03 ride.
he magnificent Balltown view and Iowa in June combine to make this a ride that you will long remember, whether you are racing or simply enjoying the tour.
However, bring your climbing attitude. This route is not for the faint of heart - more than one rider has walked the steep series of rollers that are encountered north of highway 20. But those that complete Balltown agree that triumph trumps pain!
The Balltown Century
Does 200 sound like too much? Then you might find the Balltown Century is just what you're looking for! There have been quite a few that tested the waters with this kinder, gentler version of the ride. 100 miles to Balltown and get shuttled back to DeWitt! You will even have time to visit Brietbach's Country Restaurant. Half the distance and half the hills!

Balltown is a small, population 104, Iowa farming community located on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River Valley on the eastern border of the state. One of the highpoints of this event comes when you arrive at Ridge Road which skirts the towering bluffs above the big river and reveals a panorama of three states - Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois.
Just one of the scenic vistas that make this ride one of a kind!
